The contribution is a exchange between the artist duo Bik van der Pol and their work ‘Eminent Domain’ and ‘Saint Helena’ created by Thomas Artur Spallek. Both projects share the interest in human action in relation to ecology and the inclusion of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species to transform or shift data information into aesthetical forms related to experience and visibility.

Typeface
Based on the idea of writing as essentially intended to memorize and manifest knowledge.
The project works with this basic meaning and use of font to
further formulate shape to extinct species in order to give voice to a gone appearance. Saint Helena is a typeface that generates symbols. The symbols consist of individual characters that are not arranged from left to right, as in western reading, but are stacked over each other vertically.

Eminent Domain
In 2015 Bik Van der Pol presented the project Eminent Domain in the Powerplant in Toronto. The work showed a selection of extinct species displayed on a floor installation and mirrored panels by depicting their designation. These data are derived from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, more specifically the archived list of extinct species as counted from the year 1500.
